High Spatial Resolution Hubble Space Telescope NICMOS Observations of Markarian 231
نویسندگان
چکیده
Observations of Markarian 231 at 1.1 mm taken with NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope are described. The brightness of the object in the near-infrared, and the inherent short-term stability of the NICMOS optical and instrumental system, enables the application of special observational and analysis techniques that effectively increase high spatial resolution. By these means, we set an upper limit on the size of the core of the active galactic nucleus at 8 mas, corresponding to a radial projected distance of ∼3 pc from the center of Markarian 231.

متن کاملAnalysis of Polarized Light with NICMOS
The Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ) contains optics in Cameras 1 and 2 (NIC1 and NIC2) that enable imaging polarimetry at D1 and 2 km, respectively, with unprecedented spatial detail. PreÑight thermal vacuum tests revealed that the three polarizers in each camera have unique polarizing efficiencies and that the rotational orie...
متن کاملHigh - resolution Near - Infrared Images and Models of the Circumstellar Disk in HH 30
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-object Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of the reflection nebulosity associated with the T Tauri star HH 30. The images show the scattered light pattern characteristic of a highly inclined, optically thick disk with a prominent dustlane whose width decreases
متن کاملCOSMOS : Hubble Space Telescope Observations
The Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) was initiated with an extensive allocation (590 orbits in Cycles 12-13) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for high resolution imaging. Here we review the characteristics of the HST imaging with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) and parallel observations with NICMOS and WFPC2. A square field (1.8⊓⊔) has been imaged with single-orbit ACS I-F814W expos...
متن کاملNicmos Observations of Gg Tau's Circumbinary Disk
GG Tau is an ideal system for studying the structure of a circumbinary disk. Separated by 0.0025 (35 AU at d=140pc; Ghez et al. 1993, AJ 106), the stellar components of the binary are surrounded by a massive disk. Originally detected through thermal dust emission at millimeter wavelengths (Dutrey et al. 1994, A&A 286; Guilloteau et al. 1999, A&A in press), the disk was subsequently imaged in sc...
